Interdisciplinarity is always a site where expressions of resistance are latent…Specialists are often too protective of their own prerogatives, do not actually work with other colleagues, and therefore do not teach their students to construct a diagonal axis in their methodology.

Julia Kristeva, interviu, in The Anxiety of Interdisciplinarity, 1997

Short Profile
Interdisciplinarity is always a site where expressions of resistance are latent.

(Julia Kristeva, in The Anxiety of Interdisciplinarity, 1997)

PLATFORMA started in 2011 as an independent artistic and curatorial project space and with a self-constructed exhibitions program.

We are interested in: interdisciplinary strategies and methods of collaboration, social and political activism, visual anthropology, the relationship between art and research. Our program combines exhibitions (main media: video, film, photography, text, installations, and drawings), workshops and conferences (with an interdisciplinary target, from the arts, social sciences, cultural studies, urban research), film projections, performances, experimental sound and music performances, open studio work periods etc.

Every year our program has an overall dominant theme: in 2011-2012, most of the shows held at Platforma dealt with memory, the loss of it, archive and fiction, in the context of Romanian art from the last 5 decades and of contemporary Romanian society. Starting with fall 2012 and into 2013, the program will focus on the relationship between art, emotions, sensorial explorations and stepping out of art’s esthetical discourse frame. Art is to be taken personally; it deals with reaching and going beyond the edge of comfort – we all know that, so we will try to put that into practice. In late 2013 and 2014 we will focus on sociology and action – the relationship between practicing interdisciplinarity, sociological research and art’s intervention in the social and political context.

Hosted by MNAC (the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Bucharest) in its MNAC Anexa building, Platforma is a project coordinated by artists, who aims at working with the best of both worlds – of artist-run galleries and of the contemporary art museum.
We aim to use the experimental, informal aspects of our project space to promote young artists and interdisciplinary or community collaborations, to contribute to the all too necessary formation of a larger audience for contemporary art on the Romanian art scene and to the formation of an active interdisciplinary community. We also assume an educational mission, through workshop, debates, informal education structures.
